'A Day in the Life' is back with a twist - we caught up with one of our Twitter followers, Rhys, to hear all about life as a Modern Apprentice! Joining us at our office in Quarriers Village, we spent the morning discussing his role as an apprentice, alongside his new venture with Scotland's Apprentice Network and were blown away by his clear sense of focus and maturity. Putting the world to rights and discussing the impact of apprenticeships for young people, Rhys gave us an insight into his day-to-day roles and responsibilities and has some key tips for young people considering their career and education options.
Whilst at school, Rhys took time to consider the options at hand and spoke with his school's Careers Adviser who pointed him in the direction of apprenticeships. After researching the opportunities available on websites like Apprenticeships.scot and Glasgow Guarantee, Rhys took time to apply for his current role as a Business Administration Modern Apprentice with Gateway Shared Services and a year later, it would be fair to say that he is thriving in his new role.
What made you consider an apprenticeship?
Based within the Work Placement team, his remit is to contact employers and organise placement opportunities, whilst working on web development and associated training for establishments within a number of local authorities... it sounds like he's kept on his toes! As part of his apprenticeship, Rhys is also working towards achieving his level 2 SVQ in Business and Administration through providing evidence of his work-based experiences...
"I have my coursework which is half a day and that's looking at the work I've done already and taking evidence of each thing - either a screenshot or a little explanation."
Rhys explains that undertaking an apprenticeship allows him to learn more about the industry and develop his knowledge-base and skillset, all whilst gaining a qualification recognised by the SQA and valued by employers.
What are the benefits of an apprenticeship?
Alongside the responsibilities that come with his Modern Apprenticeship, Rhys has recently taken on a new adventure as an Ambassador for Apprenticeships in Scotland through Skills Development Scotland's new initiative - Scotland's Apprentice Network! After being sent an email from his current manager about the opportunity, Rhys leapt at the chance to join the network. Since joining, he has been spreading the word about apprenticeships through school talks, attending a variety of events and through his own dedicated Twitter...
"With the Apprentice Network, a lot more people are getting supported! It was actually only launched this year so it's very new, but our hope is that it thrives and keeps growing to benefit young people."
Reflecting on this time last year, Rhys explains the importance of looking into the opportunities available to you and doing your research! Whilst heading straight to college or university is right for some it's important to really consider your options and remember that there is no wrong path on your journey to success...
"I think the most important factor is making sure you know what's available to you out there. Obviously, you've got university and college but if you're looking to do on-the-job work, learn more about the industry - getting hands on - then maybe an apprenticeship is for you. Make sure that you know all the different options available moving forward from school or further education."
